This substantial town at the entrance of the fjord where Geiranger is situated, has a lot to offer visitors.
We had planned to share a car with friends and drive to another remote island which is a bird sanctuary. Sadly, the weather had changed and it was wet as well as cold. Undaunted we set off for an adventurous day exploring the area remote from the town.
After a lengthy walk across Runde Island to see what birds we could, we drove back to Alesun and walked around the Sunnmore Museum. Unfortunately it was too late in the afternoon to see the indoor exhibits, but we were able to wander around the outdoor exhibits – houses centuries old and lots of replica viking and other types of boats.
Then we drove up to the lookout point (no energy for the 400+ steps which is the other way to get to the top) Aksla.
A long tiring day but wonderful nonetheless

Part of the drive island hopping involved taking a ferry

Otherwise islands were connected by bridges

Many of the bridges were one say with a passing bay at the highest point. They were so steep you could not see if anything was coming from the opposite direction

Unusual snails on the rugged path we eventually abandoned

Our friends struggling ahead of us. We fared no better

We eventually found the proper path

Well we are in a bird sanctuary after all…… Happily he did not take off!

There’s a puffin colony on this side of the island, but they come back to roost in the evening unfortunately
The closest we came to puffins was the little fridge magnet we brought back with us!

People do wild things in wild places

Lots of skewer birds were coming and going from their ground nests

Heading back the rain made it tough going. Our friends Bill and Christy. Christy decided to resort to the umbrella by this time

The closest we got to a puffin sighting
