Old Great North Road

On a beautiful sunny Sunday we headed for Wiseman’s Ferry to take a walk along the convict built Great North Road near Wiseman’s Ferry.
What a feat of engineering and sheer physical labour. More than 550 convicts worked on the road between 1829 and 1832 and by the time it was finished it was more or less abandoned as a route to the Hunter region. Lack of water proved to be the undoing of those behind the master plan.
Now the road is kept for posterity by National Parks and Wildlife and is well maintained and worth a visit.
